SOURCE OF WELDING FUMES

The composition and amount of fume and gases generated by the welding process can be influenced by a number of factors, including the welding consumable, welding process, and the base material, including any rust, scale, oil paint, solvents, or other substance on the base material.

AWARENESS OF WELDING FUMES IN WORKSHOPS IS KEY

Many governmental or regulatory bodies issue exposure limits for components of welding fume. Check your applicable regulations to determine which limits apply to your workplace. For example, hexavalent chromium, which can be found in some welding fume, is classified as CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction) with a Permissible Exposure Limit fixed at 1ug/m3. Always consult a qualified industrial hygienist to ensure that you and your employees are staying below the applicable limits.

PURE STREAM FUME MANAGEMENT IN 3 STEPS

1. Optimization
2. Ventilation & exhaust
3. Safe work practice and PPE

WHEN USED PROPERLY, THE SOLUTIONS PROPOSED BY LINCOLN ELECTRIC CAN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FUMES INHALED BY WELDERS.

STEP 1
OPTIMIZATION – COMBINATION OF THE BEST WELDING PROCESS WITH CONSUMABLES AND EQUIPMENT

When determining how to reduce welding fume in your workplace, you may need to consider a change of welding parameters, processes and consumables. In addition to potentially reducing fume generation, PURE STREAM products offer operating weldability and performance that is comparable to equivalent products on the market.

STEP 2
EXTRACTION AND VENTILATION

When it comes to fume extraction solutions, there is no one-size-fits-all. The specific circumstances and variables of your welding operation will require you to make choices. The more data and knowledge that you are armed with up front, the better the choices you will make.
Lincoln Electric offers a complete line of portable, stationary, and engineered solutions for welding fume control. Our team of specialists can assist with your questions and concerns, and provide you with a full complement of weld fume extraction solutions.

STEP 3
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Proper ventilation may not always be an option in every welding environment. Bring fume protection and filtered air directly to the operator in difficult environments and keep it there all day with the VIKING™ 3350 PAPR Powered Air Purifying Respirator or FLIP’AIR 4500i welding helmet.
