OIL & GAS PROCESSING CHALLENGES
One of the major challenges in the oil and gas processing industry is to strike a balance among handling the changing qualities of petroleum products and by-products, increasing the productivity and service life of critical components and reducing environmental hazards.
As an example, new refineries are moving to applying conversion methods, such as Hydro-cracking, to increase yields, while also utilizing conventional distillation. This juxtaposition translates into a higher Nelson Index rating. Greater refinery complexity makes processing low-quality crude oil difficult, if not impossible, thereby precluding bottom-of-the-barrel products.
CRITICAL ROLE OF REACTORS
In addition, environmental regulations require cleaner fuels, for which the Hydro-treating process is applied. In both Hydro-cracking and Hydro-treating units, reactors play critical roles. These reactors operate under very high pressure and temperature, and are exposed to hot hydrogen. These conditions introduce damage mechanisms, such as hydrogen embrittlement and polyphonic acid corrosion.
TYPICAL CPE CONSTRUCTION
During processing of sour gas, various damages may occur as a result of wet hydrogen sulfide (H2S), such as blistering, hydrogen-induced cracking, stress-oriented hydrogen-induced cracking are possible to control and minimize with the selection of the right base material – e.g. 2.25 Cr-1Mo and 2.25 Cr-1Mo-O.25V for Hydro-cracking and Hydro-treating reactors. However, for many damages, such as polyphonic acid corrosion or wet H2S cracking, application of a protective layer is mandatory. This protective layer is called cladding.
